Why Your AI-Written Posts Sound Like Everyone Else's (And How To Fix It)

There is a specific feeling you get when you read AI-generated content. It is hard to name precisely, but you recognise it immediately. A certain smoothness. A certain sameness. Sentences that are technically correct but have no weight behind them. Openers that announce what is coming instead of just saying it. A rhythm that feels like it was averaged across a million blog posts and came out as none of them.

If your business is using AI to write content and you have noticed this problem, you are not imagining it. And the cause is almost never the model. It is the prompt.


Why AI content sounds generic

Language models are trained on billions of words from across the internet. Most of that text is average. Average blog posts, average LinkedIn updates, average marketing copy written to rank rather than to connect. The model learns what content looks like in aggregate, and when you give it a vague instruction, it produces something that looks like that aggregate.

The prompt "write a LinkedIn post about our new product launch" produces the most statistically probable LinkedIn post about a product launch. It will have an enthusiastic opener, a few bullet points, a call to action, and some hashtags. It will read like every other LinkedIn post about a product launch because that is exactly what you asked for: something that fits the pattern.

This is not a flaw in the model. It is a flaw in the instruction. The model is doing its job. You are asking it to produce something general and it is producing something general. The specificity of the output is bounded by the specificity of the input.


The patterns that give it away

Before talking about fixes, it helps to name what you are actually trying to avoid. There are specific patterns that signal AI-generated text to any trained reader:

  • Hollow openers: "In today's fast-paced world..." / "As businesses navigate an increasingly..." / "It's no secret that..." These phrases have been written millions of times. They communicate nothing and announce everything.
  • Hedge stacking: "It's worth noting that," "it's important to consider," "one might argue." Real writers make claims. AI hedges them compulsively.
  • The enthusiasm problem: "Exciting news!" / "I'm thrilled to share..." When every announcement is exciting and every insight is fascinating, nothing is.
  • Transition filler: "With that in mind," "That said," "Moving forward." These phrases exist to create a sense of flow without actually connecting ideas.
  • Symmetrical lists: Three bullet points, each exactly one line, each structured identically. Real human writing is not symmetrical.
  • The closing pivot: Every piece ends with a question: "What do you think?" or "Share your experience below." Not because it is genuinely inviting dialogue, but because AI has learned that engagement posts end with questions.

If you read your AI output and see three or more of these in a single post, the prompt is the problem.


It is not the model, it is the prompt

The same model that produces hollow marketing copy can produce writing that sounds like a specific person with a specific perspective if you give it the right inputs. I know this because I build content systems like the Camille AI OS, where every caption has to sound like a working social media manager across 4 to 7 real client accounts. The clients notice when a post sounds off.

The difference between generic AI output and output that sounds like a real person is almost entirely in the system prompt. Not in the choice of model, not in temperature settings, not in magical one-line prompts you found on a list somewhere. It is in the precision and quality of the instruction you give before you ask for anything.

This is what prompt engineering actually means when it matters. Not writing clever one-liners. Building structured specifications that constrain the model toward a specific identity and away from generic patterns.


Building a voice specification

The single most effective change you can make to your AI content workflow is writing a voice specification document and including it in every prompt. This is a structured description of how a specific person or brand writes, not what they write about.

A useful voice specification includes:

  • Tone descriptors: Not "professional and friendly." That describes every brand. Be specific: "Direct. No warm-up sentences. Leads with the point. Confident without being aggressive."
  • Sentence rhythm: Does this person write long sentences or short ones? Do they use fragments? Do they use rhetorical questions? Give examples.
  • Words they use: Specific vocabulary that appears in their real writing. Not synonyms. Their actual words.
  • Words they never use: This is often more powerful than the positive list. If a founder never says "leverage" or "synergy" or "ecosystem," that tells the model more than a list of approved words.
  • Real examples: Paste in 3 to 5 pieces of content you are happy with and tell the model: these are correct. Match this register.
  • Anti-examples: Paste in something that sounds wrong and label it: this is not the voice. Avoid this.

A voice specification written this way drops editing from a rewrite to a 5 to 10 minute polish per post. The model is no longer guessing what the brand sounds like. It has been given precise constraints.


Anti-pattern instructions

In addition to a voice specification, every system prompt I build for content includes an explicit list of banned constructions. This sounds blunt, but it is necessary.

The instruction looks something like this:

Avoid the following patterns:
- Opening sentences that begin with "In today's" or "As [group] navigate"
- The phrase "it's worth noting" or "it's important to consider"
- Any sentence structured as "Not only X, but also Y"
- Rhetorical questions used as closers
- Lists where every item is the same length and follows the same grammatical structure
- Em dashes used decoratively (use a comma or full stop instead)
- Any form of "I'm excited/thrilled/delighted to share"

The list grows over time as you catch new patterns in your output. Think of it as a style sheet for what the model is not allowed to do. The more specific it is, the less editing you need to do after.


Teaching the model discipline

Beyond the voice specification and anti-patterns, there is a third layer: instructions about what the content is supposed to do and what it is not supposed to do.

Generic AI content tries to do too many things at once. It informs, it inspires, it sells, it engages, all in the same post, which means it does none of them particularly well. Real content has a clear job. It exists to make one point, drive one action, or create one feeling.

Your system prompt should specify the job of each piece. Not just the topic: the purpose. A LinkedIn post that exists to demonstrate expertise reads differently from one that exists to start a conversation. A caption that exists to drive saves reads differently from one that exists to drive profile visits. The model can differentiate between these purposes if you tell it to. Most prompts do not.

This is the discipline that separates content that performs from content that fills a calendar. And it requires a level of prompt precision that most teams have not invested in yet, which is why AI content systems built with this approach still produce a visible quality gap against off-the-shelf AI tools.


What changes when you get this right

When you build a content system with a proper voice specification, an anti-pattern list, and purpose-specific instructions, several things shift:

  • Editing time drops significantly. You are no longer rewriting AI output from scratch. You are making small adjustments to first drafts that are already close.
  • Output becomes recognisable. Readers who know your brand can tell the difference between your content and generic AI content. The voice is consistent across posts, platforms, and topics.
  • Trust holds. For service businesses especially, the moment a client or prospect reads something that sounds like it came from a content farm, the credibility you have built takes a hit. Getting the voice right prevents that.
  • Volume becomes possible. Once the system produces output you trust, you can scale without hiring. A consistent content system is the infrastructure that makes volume sustainable.

The work required to build this properly is front-loaded. Writing a good voice specification and anti-pattern list takes time, and it improves through iteration as you catch new problems. But that investment compounds. Every piece of content the system produces after that benefits from it.
